The Wegovy Pill: Everything You Need to Know About Oral Semaglutide for Weight Loss

For years, semaglutide has only been available as an injection. That's just changed. The Wegovy Pill — a daily oral tablet delivering the same active ingredient — has been MHRA-approved and is now available at our clinic. Here's what it means for you.

What is the Wegovy Pill?

The Wegovy Pill is an oral tablet form of semaglutide — the same GLP-1 receptor agonist that's helped millions lose weight through Wegovy injections. Manufactured by Novo Nordisk and MHRA-approved in 2026, it's the first oral semaglutide specifically licensed for weight management in the UK.

If you've been interested in semaglutide but put off by weekly injections, this is genuinely significant. You take a small tablet once a day instead. Same active ingredient, same mechanism of action — just a different delivery route.

It's worth noting that oral semaglutide isn't entirely new. Rybelsus (oral semaglutide at lower doses) has been prescribed for type 2 diabetes for several years. But the Wegovy Pill delivers semaglutide at the higher doses needed for meaningful weight loss — up to 25mg daily — which is a substantial step forward.

Key point

The Wegovy Pill contains the same active ingredient as injectable Wegovy. The difference is in how it gets into your body — a daily tablet rather than a weekly injection.

How SNAC technology makes it possible

Peptide medications like semaglutide are proteins — and your stomach is specifically designed to break proteins down. That's why most biological drugs have historically required injection: if you swallowed them, your digestive system would destroy them before they could work.

The Wegovy Pill solves this with a compound called SNAC (sodium N-[8-(2-hydroxybenzoyl) amino] caprylate). SNAC is a permeation enhancer that does two things:

  • Protects semaglutide — it creates a localised buffer around the tablet, raising the pH in your stomach to shield the peptide from acidic breakdown
  • Enhances absorption — SNAC promotes the transcellular transport of semaglutide across the gastric epithelium, allowing it to enter the bloodstream directly through the stomach lining

This is why the dosing instructions matter so much. The pill needs to be taken on a completely empty stomach with a small amount of plain water — no food, other drinks, or medications for 30 minutes afterwards. Food in the stomach interferes with the SNAC mechanism and dramatically reduces absorption.

It's an elegant piece of pharmaceutical engineering, and it's what makes the difference between the tiny Rybelsus doses (up to 14mg) and the weight-loss-effective doses in the Wegovy Pill (up to 25mg).

Clinical trial results (OASIS 1)

The landmark trial for the Wegovy Pill is OASIS 1 — a phase 3, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 667 participants with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related comorbidity.

The headline results were impressive:

16.6%

Average body weight loss

64 weeks

Trial duration

667

Participants

To put that in context: a 16.6% average weight loss is clinically very significant. For someone weighing 100kg, that's roughly 16.6kg — over two and a half stone. While it's slightly lower than the ~15–17% seen with injectable Wegovy in the STEP trials, the results are in the same ballpark, which is remarkable for an oral medication.

Participants in the placebo group lost just 1.9% of their body weight over the same period, confirming that the effects are medication-driven rather than lifestyle-driven.

Important to note

Trial participants also received lifestyle counselling alongside the medication. Real-world results may vary — individual factors including adherence, diet, activity level, and metabolic health all play a role. This is not a guaranteed outcome.

Dosing schedule and how to take it

Like all GLP-1 medications, the Wegovy Pill follows a dose escalation protocol. You start low and build up gradually to give your body time to adjust and minimise side effects.

PhaseDoseDurationPrice
Month 11.5mg daily4 weeks£129
Month 24mg daily4 weeks£136
Month 39mg daily4 weeks£143
Maintenance25mg dailyOngoing£170.10

The dose escalation typically takes around 16 weeks before reaching the full maintenance dose. Your prescriber may adjust the schedule based on how you respond and any side effects you experience.

How to take the Wegovy Pill

Getting this right is important — it directly affects how well the medication absorbs:

  1. Take it first thing in the morning on a completely empty stomach — at least 6 hours after your last food or drink
  2. Swallow the tablet whole with up to 120ml (half a glass) of plain water. Do not crush, chew, or split it
  3. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking other oral medications
  4. Take it at roughly the same time each day to maintain consistent blood levels

Don't skip this

Food in the stomach significantly reduces absorption. If you eat too soon after taking the tablet, or take it with a meal, you may not get the full benefit. The 30-minute fasting window is non-negotiable.

Pill vs injection: how they compare

This is the question we get asked most. Both forms contain semaglutide and work through the same GLP-1 receptor mechanism. But there are meaningful practical differences:

FeatureWegovy PillWegovy Injection
FrequencyOnce dailyOnce weekly
MethodOral tabletSubcutaneous injection
Average weight loss16.6% (OASIS 1)Up to 15–17% (STEP trials)
StorageRoom temperatureRefrigerated before first use
NeedlesNoneYes (pre-filled pen)
Travel-friendlyVery — no cold chainRequires cool bag/fridge
Dosing flexibilityMust take daily on empty stomachFlexible injection time, weekly
Monthly cost from£129£199

Neither option is objectively "better" — it depends on your lifestyle and preferences. If you dislike needles, travel frequently, or want something that doesn't need refrigeration, the pill may suit you well. If you'd rather take something once a week and not worry about morning fasting, the injection might be more convenient.

From a clinical effectiveness standpoint, both deliver comparable results. The OASIS 1 data for the pill (16.6%) is broadly in line with the STEP trial data for the injection. We're happy to discuss which option works best for you during your consultation.

Side effects and safety

Because the Wegovy Pill contains the same active ingredient as injectable semaglutide, the side effect profile is very similar. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal:

Very common (≥1 in 10)

  • • Nausea
  • • Diarrhoea
  • • Constipation
  • • Reduced appetite

Common (1 in 10 to 1 in 100)

  • • Headache
  • • Abdominal pain
  • • Vomiting
  • • Bloating / flatulence
  • • Dizziness
  • • Fatigue

Most side effects are mild to moderate and tend to improve as your body adjusts, particularly during the dose escalation phase. This is one of the reasons we increase the dose gradually — it gives your system time to adapt.

Serious side effects are rare but can include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and (in very rare cases) thyroid tumours. We screen for risk factors before prescribing and monitor throughout treatment. If you experience severe or persistent symptoms, contact us or seek medical attention.

Safety disclaimer: The Wegovy Pill is a prescription-only medicine. It should only be used under medical supervision and is not suitable for everyone. All prescriptions at The London Weight Loss Clinic are issued by GMC-registered prescribers following a thorough health assessment.

Who is the Wegovy Pill for?

The eligibility criteria are the same as for injectable Wegovy. You may be a candidate if you:

  • Have a BMI of 30 or above (obesity)
  • Have a BMI of 27 or above with at least one weight-related health condition (e.g. type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea)
  • Are aged 18 or over
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding

The pill may be particularly appealing if you:

  • Have a needle phobia or strong dislike of injections
  • Travel frequently and want to avoid carrying injectable medications through airports
  • Prefer not to deal with refrigeration requirements
  • Want a lower-cost entry point (starting from £129/month compared to £199 for injections)
  • Simply prefer taking a daily tablet to a weekly injection

My clinical view

The Wegovy Pill represents a genuine step change in accessibility. I've spoken with many patients who were interested in semaglutide but couldn't get past the needle element. For those patients, this removes the single biggest barrier to starting treatment. — Dr. Rabih Wassel

Frequently asked questions

Is the Wegovy Pill the same as Rybelsus?

They both contain oral semaglutide, but they're licensed for different purposes. Rybelsus is approved for type 2 diabetes at doses up to 14mg. The Wegovy Pill is approved for weight management at doses up to 25mg — nearly double the maximum Rybelsus dose.

Can I switch from Wegovy injections to the pill?

Yes, in many cases. Your prescriber will advise on the appropriate transition, which may involve a period of dose adjustment. We wouldn't recommend switching mid-escalation without clinical guidance.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember that day (as long as you can do the 30-minute fasting window). If it's already late in the day, skip the missed dose and resume the next morning. Don't double up.

Can I take it with other medications?

The 30-minute fasting window applies to other oral medications too. Take the Wegovy Pill first, wait 30 minutes, then take your other tablets with breakfast. Some medications may require specific spacing — your prescriber will advise.

How quickly will I see results?

Most patients notice reduced appetite within the first 1–2 weeks. Meaningful weight loss typically begins during the second month as the dose increases. Full effects are usually seen from month 3–4 onward at the maintenance dose.

Do I need to diet or exercise?

The medication works best alongside a balanced diet and regular physical activity. You don't need to follow a strict diet, but healthy eating habits will maximise your results and support long-term weight maintenance.

Is it available on the NHS?

Not currently. The Wegovy Pill is available through private clinics like ours. NICE guidance on the oral formulation is expected in due course.

What if the pill doesn't work for me?

If you're not seeing results after 3–4 months at the full dose, we'll review your treatment plan. Options may include switching to injectable Wegovy, trying Mounjaro, or exploring other treatments. We never take a one-size-fits-all approach.
