While GLP-1 medications are generally well-tolerated, some patients experience side effects, especially during dose titration. Our medical team shares practical strategies to minimise discomfort and optimise your treatment experience.

Important Note

Most side effects are mild and tend to improve over time as your body adjusts. Always consult your healthcare provider if you experience severe or persistent symptoms.

Common Side Effects & Solutions

Nausea

The most common side effect, especially when starting or increasing dose.

Management Strategies:

  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day
  • Avoid fatty, greasy, or heavily spiced foods
  • Try ginger tea or peppermint to soothe stomach
  • Stay upright after eating; avoid lying down immediately
  • Consider oral spray formulation for more consistent blood levels

Constipation

Slower gastric emptying can affect bowel movements.

Management Strategies:

  • Increase fibre intake gradually (25-30g per day)
  • Drink plenty of water (2-3 litres daily)
  • Regular physical activity, even light walking
  • Consider a gentle fibre supplement or stool softener

Fatigue & Low Energy

Reduced calorie intake can initially cause tiredness.

Management Strategies:

  • Ensure adequate protein intake (1.2-1.6g per kg body weight)
  • Check vitamin B12, iron, and vitamin D levels
  • Maintain regular sleep schedule (7-9 hours nightly)
  • Include complex carbohydrates for sustained energy

Acid Reflux / Heartburn

Delayed gastric emptying can increase stomach acid.

Management Strategies:

  • Eat your last meal 3-4 hours before bedtime
  • Elevate head of bed by 15-20cm
  • Avoid trigger foods (caffeine, alcohol, citrus, tomatoes)
  • Consider over-the-counter antacids if needed

When to Contact Your Healthcare Provider

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

  • Severe abdominal pain that doesn't improve
  • Persistent vomiting preventing fluid intake
  • Signs of pancreatitis (severe upper abdominal pain radiating to back)
  • Symptoms of gallbladder problems (right upper abdominal pain, yellowing skin/eyes)
  • Changes in vision or severe headaches
